Turkey sues EU over steel import tariffs

The Turkish Trade Ministry said last Friday that Turkey initiated a lawsuit against the European Union (EU) on steel import tariffs with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
In February 2019, the EU stated that the sharp increase in Turkish steel imports seriously threatened steel production enterprises in member states. The EU sets import quotas for 26 steel products and imposes a 25% tariff on steel products imported in the future for a period of three years.
The Turkish Ministry of Trade stated that as one of the main steel exporting countries to the EU, Turkey's exports were adversely affected by EU's measures, and proceedings have been initiated at the WTO.
According to the latest data from the World Steel Association, in January 2020 Turkey will become the seventh largest producer of crude steel in the world. Turkey's crude steel production in 2019 was 33.7 million tons.
