The European Union has initially applauded the planned change at Ostroleka, a $1.5 billion project which Polish companies suspended last week, citing difficulties in gaining funding, said the official.

It will be up to refiner PKN Orlen SA and utility Energa SA to hammer out the details of the fuel-switch with GE, which was hired to build the coal plant, the official said.

Energa, which is being bought by Orlen, along with peer Enea SA have spent close to a quarter-billion dollars on Ostroleka, according to a December investment cost estimate by the State Assets Ministry.
