  • US Steel restarts operations at Gary Works after water leak

    On December 3, US Steel announced that it has restarted two blast furnaces at its Gary Works facility following a flood last week and is in the process of starting up another two furnaces at the facility.

    "On November 26-27, a significant water leak at US Steel's Gary Works caused the company to shut down three blast furnaces temporarily," said Amanda Malkowski, a spokeswoman for US Steel. "After a brief outage, blast furnaces #14 and #6 are now fully operational.Asian Metal Copyright" None of the blast furnaces at the facility were damaged by the flooding and there has been no impact on customers, Malkowski added.Asian Metal Copyright We expect the third, blast furnace #4, to be operational early next week."

    US Steel also disclosed that it is in the process of restarting the previously idled blast furnace #8 at the facility as the #4 blast furnace is scheduled for maintenance in early 2020. The company began preparations for the restart of blast furnace #8 earlier in November and expected it to be operational by next week.
