SMEC shaoxing finishes production of first 8-inch wafer

Semiconductor Manufacturing Electronics (ShaoXing) Corporation (SMEC) finished the production of its first 8-inch wafer on Nov. 25th. It is reported that the chip made from the wafer will be widely used in artificial intelligence, new energy vehicles, industrial control and mobile communications.
In March 2018, the construction of the integrated circuit town of Shaoxing covering 9,566 mu was started. In the same month, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), the leading wafer foundry company in China, set up a project in the town. The project of SMIC is an important cornerstone for Shaoxing City to build the "10 million mu of space and RMB100 billion output value" platform for integrated circuit. The total investment of the first phase of the project is RMB5.88 billion (USD836.61 million), with an annual output of 510,000 pieces of 8-inch characteristic integrated circuit wafer.
