Prices for varieties of magnesia declined in China in September 2019. In particular, prices for caustic calcined magnesia, low grade dead burned magnesia and fused magnesia merely decreased slightly supported by firm production costs while those of mid-grade magnesia and high-purity magnesia dropped sharply. As steel mills and refractory products plants kept low operating rates, high grade magnesia still couldn't sell well during the month. Some magnesia producers had to keep low operating rates in order to stop stocks from increasing further.
The export market of Chinese magnesia was still sluggish in September 2019 and export prices dropped further. The demand from European, American, Japanese, South Korean and South Asian customers weakened further as European and American consumers held sufficient stocks, Japanese and South Korean consumers basically refused to hold large volumes of stocks and steel mills and refractory products plants in South Asian cut outputs and lowered operating rates.
