Japan's finished steel exports down by 7.5% YOY in Jun

On July 18, Japan's Ministry of Finance released preliminary statistics showing that Japan's steel exports in June were 2.877 million tons, down 7.5% YOY and 5.3% MOM. In the same month, Japan's steel exports declined for the eighth consecutive month, mainly due to the low price of steel products and the wait-and-see attitude of users.
In June, Japan exported 2.382 million tons of steel to Asia, down 5.2% YOY. The details are as follows: the export of steel to China was 401,000 tons, down by 13.4% YOY; the export to Korea was 540,000 tons, up by 11.7% YOY, up for the third consecutive month; and the export of steel to ASEAN countries was 1.016 million tons, down by 7.3% YOY.
In June, Japan imported 634,000 tons of steel, down by 3.6% YOY and 15.1% MOM. For the first time since 2019, steel imports in that month were below 700,000 tons.
In that month, Japan imported 521,000 tons of steel from Asian countries, down by 2.6% YOY. The details are as follows: steel imports from China were 87,000 tons, down by 30.7% YOY and up by 11.7% MOM; steel imports from Korea were 292,000 tons, down by 1.6% YOY.
In June, Japan imported 42,000 tons of steel from ASEAN countries, an increase of 94.6% YOY, and 38,900 tons from Russia, an increase of 96.7% YOY. Imports of steel from EU countries reached 11,000 tons, an increase of 1.3% YOY.
