Most dead burned magnesia and caustic calcined magnesia producers in Dashiqiao and Haicheng resumed production in January 2019, leading to gradually increasing supply in the market. However, as most downstream customers already finished refilling stocks in the fourth quarter of 2018, most producers merely executed orders signed before with limited transactions concluded during January 2019. As the demand from downstream customers declined substantially while the supply increased especially against the backdrop of Spring Festival, producers were under greater pressure of stocks and funds and prices of all kinds of magnesia declined to different degrees. In particular, prices for fused magnesia declined most. With domestic steel mills, cement plants, glass plants and other consumers for refractory materials conducting equipment maintenance successively, the demand for magnesite refractories declined to some extent, leading to relatively stable prices for magnesia.
As most overseas customers finished refilling stocks before December 2018 in advance, there were only limited orders singed in January 2019. Due to limited trade volume, ship companies stopped transportation business for bulk material from January 10th. In fact, Dalian port mainly exported magnesia in containers in mid-to-late January.
