On January 18, Beijing Hezong Science & Technology Co., Ltd. announced that its subsidiary Ningbo Yuanzong Equity Investment Partnership plans to invest RMB436 million into Tianjin Maolian Technology Co., Ltd. to build a cobalt-copper smelting plant in Zambia and also to improve existing production lines. By doing this, a complete cobalt industry chain from raw material to cobalt product and to precursor will come into being. Details are as follows:
1. To build a cobalt-copper smelting plant in the Zambia-China economic cooperation zone in Kitwe City, Zambia. Its Phase I project is expected to be built and go into operation in early 2019 while Phase II project in early 2020. By 2019, the Phase I project is expected to reach a processing capacity of 500,000t of ore slag and production capacity of around 3,000 metal tons of crude cobalt hydroxide and 5,500t of copper cathodes; In 2020 the Project II project is expected to reach a processing capacity of 1 million tons of ore slag and production capacity of around 6,000 metal tons of crude cobalt hydroxide and 11,000t of copper cathodes
2. Construction of Tianjin-based old plant: In 2018 an expansion project for the current production lines will go into construction to produce refined cobalt sulfate and nickel sulfate.
Source had it that Tianjin Maolian Technology owns a copper-cobalt ore tailing pile of around 15 million tons in Zambia. Left by British companies in copper smelting in history, it is located in Kitwe city, Zambia, and occupies a total area of around 3 square kilometers. Its total resources amount to around 15 million tons with an average cobalt content around 0.89% and copper 1.23%; and the cobalt and copper resources amount to 133,500t and 184,500t, with an estimated extractable volume of around 94,000t and 166,000t respectively. As a strip mine, it is easy to conduct extracting activities in the mine.
Tianjin Maolian Technology mainly produces and sells copper cathodes, refined cobalt chloride and nickel cathodes. In the future, the company plans to develop other products including crude cobalt hydroxide, refined cobalt sulfate and NCM precursors.
