Malaysian bauxite prices unchanged

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 15 Aug 17 - From July, Malaysia became strict with new bauxite export licenses, and bauxite supply volume decreased. However, it is difficult for the price to move up because of weakening demand from China. The price for bauxite Al 40%min Si 5%max is stable at around USD27/t FOB Malaysia, and that for bauxite Al 42%min Si 3%max is unchanged at around USD30/t.
A bauxite trader in Malaysia reported that they only exported around 150,000t of the material in the first half of August and will have no export in the second half, as Malaysia does not issue new licenses. “We are not sure when the government will issue new licenses,” said the source, who holds no stock now.
They exported around 250,000t of bauxite in July. The trader’s selling price for bauxite Al 42%max Si 3%max is unchanged at around USD30/t this month.
A bauxite trader in China confirmed that they just loaded around 50,000t of Malaysian bauxite in August and will have no shipment again before Malaysia issued new export licenses. “The selling price for bauxite Al 40%min Si 5%max is stable at around USD27/t this month,” said the source, adding that it is difficult for the price to go up because Chinese alumina refineries in Shandong cut production.
The trader noted that Malaysia may have president election late this year, so they may not issue new licenses soon. They now hold around 60,000t of Malaysian bauxite in stock.
In the future, they will focus on bauxite in Jamaica and Ghana, the trader added.
