Chinese aluminum fluoride export price still sees a large gap with global market

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 25 May 17 - Due to strong market in China, the Chinese aluminum fluoride export prices were much higher than prices from other countries over the past five months. New offers from China are USD1,300-1,350/t FOB China for deals in Q3, based on firm Chinese domestic prices of RMB9,100-9,200/t (USD1,321-1,336/t) ex works.
A Chinese aluminum fluoride producer reported that they now offer USD1,350/t FOB China for new deals in Q3. “The price in Chinese domestic market is high at around RMB9,300/t (USD1,350/t) delivered, so the export price should go up for new deals,” explained the source.
According to the source, they had no exports over the past two months and will export around 2,000-3,000t in June based on old contracts at around USD1,200/t FOB China.
Based on the capacity of 80,000tpy, the plan was out of production in May and may resume late this month. They now hold no stock.
A primary aluminum smelter in the Middle East confirmed that their purchase price for aluminum fluoride is only around USD940/t based on CFR terms in Q2, down from USD945/t in Q1. “Alumina and aluminum hydroxide prices dropped in Q2, so I don’t think the price will move up in Q3,” said the source, adding that aluminum fluoride supply is surplus in the global market. They purchase the material from Africa, Italy and Sweden and has no plan for China.
Based on the smelting capacity of 2.4 million tonnes per year, they now need to consume and purchase around 13,000t of aluminum fluoride every quarter. They keep stocks for consumption in 20 days now.
