Chinese molybdenum powder price falls back

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 17 Mar 16 - Some molybdenum powder producers have lowered the price for the material recently due to the sluggish market. The current mainstream price for Chinese molybdenum powder 99.95%min is RMB138-143/kg, slightly down by RMB2/kg from last week. Consumers are cautious to make purchases at present and the molybdenum powder price will still bear downward pressure due to the weak demand.
“We will purchase some molybdenum powder next week and received offers at around RMB143/kg (USD22.0/kg Mo) from suppliers yesterday. They may have marked the price down by RMB2-3/kg (USD0.31-0.46/kg Mo) in March,” said a molybdenum powder consumer in Central China. The source claimed that they purchased 15t of molybdenum powder 99.95% at RMB145/kg (USD22.3/kg Mo) in late February, up by RMB2/kg (USD0.31/kg Mo) from the figure before the Spring Festival.
The consumer mainly purchases molybdenum powder to produce molybdenum targets with a monthly consumption of 15-20t. They hold about 20t of molybdenum powder in stock at present. “We believed that the price for molybdenum powder may decline further in the future because of the sluggish demand and downward pressure on the upstream raw material price,” he added.
“Our price for molybdenum powder 99.95%min has been stale at RMB140/kg (USD21.5/kg Mo) since the end of the Spring Festival, which has been lowered to around RMB137/kg (USD21.2/kg Mo) recently because some consumers intend to make purchases,” said a producer of molybdenum powder in Central China. He said that the current purchasing is inactive and regular consumers usually purchase 2-3t at a time. He believed that the price for the material will remain stable in short time despite the downward trend.
With an annual capacity of 540t, the producer suspended production in February, which was resumed in early March. The output in March is expected to reach about 15t, stable from early January. They also produce downstream molybdenum products like molybdenum plates and molybdenum rods, etc. They hold 15-20t of molybdenum powder in stock at hand currently.
