BEIJING (Asian Metal) 30 Jul 15 - Although Chinese origin alumina prices moved down by RMB65/t (USD10/t) to around RMB2,310/t (USD373/t) ex works in July, prices of Chinese origin bauxite are steady at around RMB320-330/t (USD52-53/t) d
A Henan-based alumina producer reported that they purchased around 150,000t of bauxite in July, and the price for bauxite (Al/Si=5.5) was around RMB330/t (USD53/t) d . d . p, the same with that in June . “The alumina price decline does not affect bauxite prices, as bauxite mining cost is high,” said the source, who anticipates steady prices in August.
According to the source, they consume around 160,000-170,000t of bauxite per month and holds around 500,000t of bauxite in stock. The alumina refinery is running fully at the capacity of 800,000tpy.
A Shanxi-based alumina producer confirmed the unchanged bauxite prices in July. “We bought around 500,000t of bauxite in Shanxi this month, and the price is stable at RMB320/t (USD52/t) d . d.p for bauxite (Al/Si=5 . 5),” said the source.
He explained that bauxite supply was surplus in 2014, leading to price decrease in last year. Therefore, bauxite mining companies cut production this year . “As far as I know, some big mining companies cut daily production by around 50% to 10,000t,” said the source, adding that there may be no obvious change for the price in the second half of this year.
They consume around 500,000t of bauxite per month and hold around 1 million tonnes of stocks.
