BEIJING (Asian Metal) 8 Jul 15 - From mid-June, bauxite land transportation inspection became loose in Malaysia, and more bauxite owners took the opportunity to deliver bauxite to Guantan port, leading to port congestion again
A Malaysian bauxite owner reported that they exported around 300,000t of bauxite in June, but the volume may drop to around 200,000t in July due to the port congestion problem. “From the middle of last month, bauxite land transportation control became loose, and bauxite supply increased in the port,” said the source, adding that bauxite ships need to wait for 7 days at least before shipment in the port, while it only takes 3 days normally.
According to the source, they mainly supply high-grade bauxite Al 46-48% Si 5%max and the price is around USD46-47/t FOB Malaysia, unchanged with that in June. They also export part low grade bauxite with the price at around USD30/t FOB Malaysia.
A Chinese bauxite importer confirmed that they are troubled with port congestion problem. “We sent one ship to Malaysia last month, but it wait in the port for 6 days and cannot get loaded still,” said the source, noting that shipment was easy in May . They once expected that shipment should be finished in late June.
The importer purchased around 40,000-50,000t of bauxite Al 46-48% Si 5%max in May and the price was around USD56-57/t CIF China. “There is no change for the price in June and July,” said the source.
