Big bauxite owners keep normal export volumes in Malaysia

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 29 May 15 - Malaysian policy becomes strict with bauxite exploitation and transportation
A bauxite owner in Malaysia mentioned that they can still export around 8 ships of bauxite in May, basically the same with that in April. One ship usually loads 40,000-50,000t of bauxite . “Many small miners stop production because of the strict policy, but our bauxite operation is not affected by the policy, as we have required licenses,” said the source, adding that Malaysia issued strict policies on bauxite exploitation and transportation after local residents parade . Illegal bauxite exploitation and messy transportation lead to local environment pollution and affect local residents’ life.
According to the owner, their concluded prices remain stable at around USD47/t FOB Malaysia for bauxite Al 46-47%. “We have no plan to raise prices in order to maintain regular clients,” said the source.
The source predicted that China’s overall bauxite imports from Malaysia may slump in May since many small owners have halted production.
Another bauxite producer in Malaysian confirmed that their export volume in May will be stable at around 400,000t. “We are not worried about the strict policy from Malaysia, as we have essential licenses . However, many small producers will be influenced by the policy,” said the source.
The producer stated that they mainly sell to bauxite traders and the concluded price remains unchanged at around USD30/t FOB Malaysia for bauxite Al 40-41% Si 5%max. “I think the price may edge up because of overall supply decline in Malaysia,” predicted the source.
The source noted that they have around two big ships with bauxite volume at around 150,000t for each per month.
