Chinese domestic aluminum market kept sluggish in 2012. On one hand, global economy stayed sluggish due to the effect of European debt crisis, which exerted great pressures on Chinese domestic aluminum market. On the other hand, aluminum smelting capacity in Northwest China kept expanding, making the problem of oversupply more serious and average cost of aluminum ingot decrease gradually. However, although alumina price drop to lower levels together with aluminum ingot price, it still did not stop the quick expansion of alumina capacity in China.
