The West Australian reported that Mr Ian Burston has stepped down from the board of iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group.

Dr Burston has several decades of experience in WA and international mining, formerly holding board roles for companies including Carrick Gold, Focus Minerals, Aviva Corp, Cliffs Asia Pacific and Cape Lambert Resources.

He is currently on the boards of Mincor Resources, Energio and African Iron.

Fortescue in a statement said that "Due to personal considerations, Dr Burston was concerned about his ability to devote the requisite time to Fortescue and chose to tender his resignation as a director.”

Fortescue said that Mr Geoff Raby had accepted an invitation to join the board as a non executive independent director.

Dr Raby was Australia's ambassador to China between 2007 and 2011.
