AM Insight: Gallium output to increase in CIS

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 17 Jan 11 – Gallium is widely applied in semiconductor, solar battery material and such hi-tech products
Gallium is a typical scattered and accompanying metal which mainly accompanies with aluminum and zinc sulfide. The gallium reserve of CIS adds up to 10,000 tons, of which 90% in Russia, 8% in Kazakhstan, and the rest 2% distributes in Ukraine and other CIS countries . There are more than ten companies are able to produce native gallium, high-purity gallium, gallium arsenide and other gallium products . The two major companies are Kazakhstan Aluminum owned by Eurasian Source and Nikolayev Alumina Plant located in Ukraine owned by Russian Aluminum . In the year of 2010, the two companies produced 37 tons of gallium while other companies produced about 8 tons.
Russia exports over 95% of the gallium output. Effected by the crisis, gallium 99.99% price dropped to USD350/kg at the end of 2009, and then kept stable during the first part of 2010 . The price began to soar as the end of crisis in Q3 2010.
It's reported that Russian Aluminum has concluded a deal of gallium 99.99% at USD680/kg at the end of last December and now quotes USD700/kg . They believe gallium demand will grow up accordingly with the improvement of global economics and the development of gallium applications . Russian Aluminum plans to enlarge its output of gallium 99 . 99% from 13 . 7 tons to 15 tons. As a source of Russian Aluminum told, they concluded a one-year contract of 500kg/m with a European consumer at the price of RMB650/kg.
Located in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan Aluminum is the largest aluminum oxide plant and the largest gallium plant of CIS. The annual output of the company is about 25 tons, most of which are exported to Japan by long-term contracts. As insiders released, Kazakhstan Aluminum signed with its major Japanese clients one-year contract at the price of USD600/kg, and the price sustained to now . Meanwhile, Russian Aluminum’s clients are mainly from U . S . or Europe with small volume, so the price is higher than that of Kazakhstan Aluminum.
Some recycled gallium plants emerged into the market because of the increasing price. Though the output of Russian recycled gallium is still blank, the industry will achieve an excellent development this year.
