Handan Steel expands plate production

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 12 Apr 23 - Handan Iron and Steel Group Co. (Handan Steel), a subsidiary of Hebei Iron and Steel Group Co. (HBIS), estimates that the output of steel plate would reach 130,000t in April, up from 40,000t in March.
"Prices of steel plate remain about RMB200/t (USD30/t) higher than HRC and above RMB300/t (USD45/t) higher than rebar, which means the profit for steel plate keeps the most considerable at the moment. Therefore, we tend to transfer iron melt from other products to the steel plate production, and the output of steel plate would witness a MoM rise of 90,000t to 130,000t in April," disclosed a sales official from Handan Steel. Meanwhile, the source disclosed that the 3,500mm steel plate production line fails to run fully now restricted by the absence of one heating furnace. Officially launched production in Shexian Plant in the middle of March, the 3,500mm line mainly produces carbon and low-alloyed steel plate right now. The 2,800mm line in the old plant of Handan remains suspension.
Based on an annual steel plate production capacity of 2.8 million tons for two lines (2,800mm, 3,500mm), Handan Steel just produced approximately 60,000t of steel plate in the first quarter of 2023, against 760,000t or so in 2022. The mill holds no stock for the moment.
Presently, the prevailing price of steel plate Q235B 14-25mm hovers at RMB4,350/t (USD632/t) D/P in warehouse Tangshan, Hebei, down by RMB30/t (USD4/t) from Monday. Discouraged by the downward price trend, end users remain inactive in placing orders, and the market runs slowly.
