Ministry of Power of India indicated that the country plans to cut the capacity of at least 81 coal-fired power plants over the next four years to replace expensive thermal power generation with cheaper clean energy.
India now has 173 coal-fired power plants in operation. The capacity cuts are expected to reduce power generation by 58 billion KWh, save 34 . 7 million tons of coal and reduce carbon emission by 60 . 2 million tons.
