BEIJING (Asian Metal) 5 Aug 05 - Major bismuth smelters are reluctant to sell and await higher prices, as they reported to Asian Metal
"We're not enticed enough to sell bismuth," an official from a major smelter said.
The source believes that the price will continue to climb. "Some major bismuth smelters have firm belief the price would soon hit RMB90,000/t[USD4.48/lb], and one even anticipates the price reaching RMB100,000/t [USD4.97/lb]," said the source .
According to Chinese Customs statistics, the 2005 H1 bismuth exports volume (2,888t) fell below half the 2004 export volume (5,899t)figure under review, so demand has remained sustained. "Furthermore, demand for bismuth is increasing year on year, so we have good reasons to believe that the price may continue to climb," added the source.
According to the source, Chinese smelters now insist on prices around RMB85,000-86,000/t and USD4.20/lb for domestic and international orders respectively . However, the smelter has not receive many inquiries in recent time .
The smelter has difficulties obtaining the raw material, because those who have and control it refuse to sell while others limit their sales volume. Added to with their unwillingness to sell is the exorbitant price they quote.
A week ago, the smelter bid RMB52,000/metal ton for local bismuth 15%min raw material but the supplier rejected the bid. This week they bid RMB54,000/metal ton, and are refused again.
Days ago, the smelter concluded 20t of bismuth 50%min raw material for RMB60,000/metal ton and some bismuth 91%min for RMB69,000/t VAT excluded.
The smelter now produces 20tpm, with around 100 tons inventory on hand, said the source.
