Canada-based Ivanhoe Mines' Kamoa-Kakula copper mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) said that its first truck loads of copper concentrates for export departed from the mine on 17 July, destined for smelters outside of the country.
All output from the mine's first-phase project will be sold through Citic Metal and China's Zijin Mining, according to an agreement signed in early June.
The customs approval process typically takes about five days. The cargoes will be shipped out of the DRC and to South Africa's Durban.
Phase 1 of Kamoa-Kakula, currently ramping up to steady-state production, is expected to produce 3.8 million tonnes a year, ramping up to 7 . 6 million tonnes per year in late 2022 . After several phases of expansion, the mine's peak annual copper production will be more than 800,000 tonnes.
