Four steel mills in Tangshan fined RMB1 million

On March 14, the official website of the Tangshan Municipal Government of Hebei Province announced that, the city will fully implement emergency emission reduction measures during heavy pollution, and crack down environmental problems in steel mills.
Tangshan took measures against existed problems on HBIS Tangsteel Stainless Steel Company, Tangshan Jinma Iron and Steel Group Co., Ltd., Tangshan Chunxing Special Steel Co., Ltd. and Tangshan Donghua Iron and Steel Enterprise Group Co., Ltd. in accordance with laws, fined the four steel mills which failed to implement emergency response measures to heavy pollution weather RMB1 million (USD153,763), and downgraded the pollution emission performance ratings to D level.
The pollution discharge permits of the four mills involved were all recovered, and the discharge volume would be strictly verified again. The relevant responsible persons were administratively detained in accordance with laws, the relevant supervisors would be held responsibility, and other illegal clues were transferred to the public security organs for full investigation.
This environmental storm originated from the surprise inspection of Tangshan by HUANG Runqiu, the minister of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. According to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the inspection found that although Tangshan has initiated a second-level emergency response to heavey pollution weather, the above-mentioned four companies all produced at high rates and failed to implement the corresponding production curbs during the heavy pollution alert. At the same time, they falsified production records generally, and some even whispered to each other and deleted production records to respond to inspections. The relevant clues have been handed over to the local public security department.
