First batch of scrap metal import license to be issued in H2 2019

According to Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE), eight kinds of solid waste including iron and steel scrap, copper scrap and aluminum scrap will be added to the list of solid waste which is restricted to be imported in China staring July 1, 2019. Preparatory work related to the first batch of import license for scrap metal has been done, with the approval work on track to complete.
According to MEE's press spokesman, China imported about 3.43 million tonnes of solid waste in the first quarter of 2019, down by 37.6% YOY. The import volume of solid waste (restricted) was 2.715 million tonnes, down by 38.5% YOY. In late April 2019, relevant companies were informed by provincial-level environmental protection department and organization to submit applications for importing metal scrap. For eligible applicants, MEE will speed up the approval process and aims to issue the first batch of scrap metal import license before the end of June.
