Compared with 2017, demand for Chinese black silicon carbide weakened and prices fell back to some extent in 2018
As for the export market, affected by relatively slow growth in economy in the world, China's silicon carbide exports moved down and export prices declined in 2018 compared with 2017. Strict environmental inspections in China led to high production costs, thus prices for Chinese silicon carbide stayed at high levels and gradually lost their advantages.
. In H1 2018, black silicon carbide prices moved down amid gradual recovery of supply as some Ningxia-based producers who suspended production resumed operation, and prices for the material stabilize on the whole in H2 2018 . With strengthened environmental inspections in the Chinese domestic market, demand for the material from consumers in North China reduced as most of them cut outputs or halted production; meantime, producers in Northwest China decreased or halted production, leading to the decline in overall supply and demand . In Q4 2018, domestic demand weakened further and silicon carbide prices inched down . In early December, environmental inspections strengthened in Wuwei city, Gansu province, and smelters in Tianzhu city of the province were required to cut outputs by 50% . As a result, local producers took opportunities to raise prices, but downstream users refused to accept the price increase . At the same time, Chinese green silicon carbide producers suspended production successively . By late 2018, there were only three Xinjiang-based producers in operation . With supply shortage of green silicon carbide natural lump in the second half of this year, many buyers placed orders at the same time in November and December. As for the export market, affected by relatively slow growth in economy in the world, China's silicon carbide exports moved down and export prices declined in 2018 compared with 2017.
