According to data released by China Customs, China's imports of copper scrap from the United States increased in December 2018, putting an end to the six straight months of decline, as most Chinese copper scrap importers increased their import volume by a large amount before China will implement stricter supervision measures in 2019.
The data shows that China imported 5,236t of copper scrap in December 2018, up by 14.3% compared with 4,580t in November but still less than one tenth of 60,440t in December 2017.
China's total copper scrap imports from U.S . recorded 351,517t in 2018, down by 34 . 3% compared with 535,371t in 2017.
Affected by the trade war, China has put a 25% tariff on copper scrap imported from the United States since August 2018, after which China's imports of U.S . origin copper scrap declined by a large amount while its imports of the material from Japan increased by 49 . 2% YOY to 44,186t, which fill the gap in copper scrap imports . According to the data, Japan was the largest copper scrap source country to China in 2018.
