1. Market Highlights
In Chinese market, though the number of silicon metal plants who halted their production in South China kept rising this month, it didn't change the comparatively low level of downstream demand in general. After the sharp price decline in November, the price finally showed the stabilizing trend entering December. Downstream consumers started to replenish their stocks in succession from the end of last month and transactions picked up in December, though they have not recovered to the same level last year. As the market inventories were still at high level, the moderate recovery failed to drive the price up. In addition, approaching the end of the year, some silicon metal producers sold their products at lower prices to get cash, which became the main drag on the price this month. In general, for low grade silicon metal, the range of the price drop was narrower compared with last month when the price dropped sharply, and price for silicon metal 5-5-3 even rose slightly. For high grade silicon metal, prices decreased by a bigger range for lack of improvement of the market. For chemical grade silicon metal, price went down slightly this month, the same with last month. For export market, as Christmas and New Year Holiday arrived at the end of December, foreign buyers purchased actively from the beginning till the middle of this month to replenish their stocks. Transaction volume rose obviously at that time and declined after Christmas.
