  • MIIT: China to cut iron and steel capacity by 30 million tonnes in 2018

On July 25, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of the People's Republic of China issued the Three-year Work Plan for Tackling Pollution in Communication Industry and Others ("the Plan") in order to promote the high-quality development of China's communication industry and other industries.

According to the Plan, by 2020, the industrial added value energy-consumption ratio of enterprises above designated size shall be 18% lower than that of 2015, and the proportion of green manufacturing and high-tech industries will increase significantly. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the surrounding areas, the Yangtze River Delta region, the Fen-Wei Plains, and the Yangtze River Economic Belt will witness significant decline in the proportion of heavy chemical industry, with a more optimized industrial layout and structure.

The Plan also clearly points out that China has set the goal to reduce about 30 million tonnes of iron and steel capacity in 2018 and aims to complete that de-capacity task of 150 million tonnes put forward during the 13th Five Year Plan ahead of schedule. By the end of 2020, the iron and steel capacity in Hebei should not exceed 200 million tonnes.Asian Metal Copyright The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the surrounding areas, the Yangtze River Delta region, the Fen-Wei Plains, and the Yangtze River Economic Belt will witness significant decline in the proportion of heavy chemical industry, with a more optimized industrial layout and structure.Asian Metal Copyright The Plan also stresses on taking strict precautions against the reemergence of substandard steel.
