Iron ore demand improved in the first half of April when steel mills in Hebei gradually resumed production as a result of softening environmental protection pressure. But the huge supply in the spot market hindered iron ore prices from rebounding much. And in the second half of April, the closure of steel mills in Xuzhou of Jiangsu were all forced to halt production, which decreased iron ore demand and prices of iron ore fines retreated in the last week of the month. Most insiders are not optimistic about downstream steel market and then iron ore market as well in the coming May when the environmental protection pressure is expected to remain high in Jiangsu and may expand to other provinces in South China. And demand of iron ore would suffer as a result and the prices of both Chinese domestic and imported iron ore would not have much chance to rebound further.
