In early January 2017, a downtick in Chinese manganese flake prices was observed; but as the year-end was approaching, most Chinese traders set out to restock the material in the first half of the month, and the market began to see trading activities becoming more active and prices gradually stopping sliding; in the latter half of the month, before the Spring Festival finally fell, transactions became sluggish and prices remained stable
. However, many Chinese steel plants which made purchases of manganese flake in January witnessed a plunge in their purchase volumes, just as in the case of Chengde Group which had already cancelled its December purchase and again put off January purchase to February . It was expected that a notable decrease in demand for Chinese manganese flake will be seen in January and February 2017.
