Because of alumina market recovery, demand for imported bauxite witnessed significant progress in 2016 and the annual consumption capacity also reached 71.26 million tonnes until late 2016, up by 17 . 9% YOY.

The demand increase was mainly from Shandong province, where the demand proportion reached 98.3% in 2016, up from 96 . 3% in 2015 . The rest was from Henan, Chongqing and Inner Mongolia . The demand from Henan slipped from 1 . 6% in 2015 to 0 . 1% in 2016, as consumers suspended imported bauxite consumption because of high cost.
In spite of demand increase in China, imported bauxite supply was not stable. Malaysia issued bauxite mining ban early 2016 . Chinese consumers had to develop new resources from Guinea . Imported bauxite stocks dropped by 10 . 5% YOY to around 29 . 5 million tonnes late 2016 . In 2017, Malaysia may open bauxite mining and Guinean bauxite supply will increase further, so the stocks may climb up gradually.
