GRIM successful explores super high purity scandium oxide

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 12 Dec 16 - Early this week, a source disclosed to Asian Metal that Guangxi Research Institute of Metallurgy (“GRIM” for short) has spent many years to produce high purity scandium oxide, successful exploring the scandium oxide 99.999%min in this October.
“Currently, we have a pilot production line and we spend 5 days to produce 400-500g of scandium oxide 99.999%min per batch, while the high scandium oxide 99.999%min recovery rate is just 70% and others are scandium oxide 99.9%min products,” said the source, adding that the current scandium oxide 99.999%min price is around RMB60,000-70,000/kg (USD8,697-10,145/kg) by cash payment. He also noted that scandium oxide 99.999%min mainly used into the microelectronics materials, gamma ray source, organic chemical additives, high temperature fuel cell, super high purity scandium metal preparation and other fields. Now the company is actively seeking to cooperate with customers.
Founded in 1958, the GRIM is one of China’s earliest scientific research units to carry out research in scandium purification technology and the only institute that engaged in metal and non-metal scientific research, application and engineering design in Guangxi Province. The institute has independently developed 99.9-99.999% high purity scandium oxide products since 1990s. In recent years, GRIM further enhances advantages in resource and technology of scandium as a base of national torch plan "The comprehensive recovery of scandium resources and the demonstration of high purity scandium production” and scandium materials engineering technology research center of Guangxi Province. Currently, the institute, which is main processing for other plants, owns an annual capacity of 1.5 tons of scandium oxide 99.99% min, with an output of 100kg of scandium oxide 99.99% min in November.
According to Asian Metal’s investigation, the Chinese scandium oxide 99.99%min mainstream prices hover at RMB8,300-8,800/kg (USD1,203-1,275/kg) by cash payment, down by RMB200/kg (USD29.0/kg) compared with two weeks ago. Taking the thin profits of suppliers, insiders are of the opinion that the price will show stable trend in the coming week.
