Iron ore market recovered very apparently in March with steel production improving gradually and steel prices rising very significantly. Meanwhile, iron ore supply was relatively low while China’s domestic iron ore production was still limited due to low operation and the inventory of imported iron ore also dropped much due to decreasing shipment in past two months affected by the holiday and hindrances from weather and other factors. Pushed by the increasing demand, prices of both domestic and imported iron ore were going upward very quickly in the month.
Insiders are still optimistic about iron ore market in the coming April when iron ore output may keep improving and the downstream real estate industry usually starts warming since April, which would lead to better steel market performance, and iron ore market would benefit as well. But meanwhile, iron ore supply is also increasing, and at a much faster pace, which may weaken suppliers’ expectations in the second half of the month when steel production would be depressed by the Tangshan exposition.
