Thai rebar price moves up slightly

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 31 Oct 13 – The current rebar market in Thailand is making some progress and the price is on a slightly upward trend. As the rainy season is over and the demand for construction steel is expected to increase from November, insiders predict that the price will keep firm or go up again in coming one or two weeks.
A rebar steel producer in Bangkok reported that the current price of rebar TIS SD40 Φ16-25mm is THB20,000/t (USD644/t, VAT excluded), up by THB500/t compared with that of two weeks ago.
The source said the price of the raw material-steel billet in Thailand is on an increasing trend and it is USD540-550/t ex-works, meanwhile, the import price also moves up by USD5-10/t to USD530-540/t CFR Thailand. Therefore, driven by the higher production cost, the mill raised its rebar price. The mill is running normally with a monthly rebar output of 20,000t at present and the source deemed that the rebar price will be firm in coming one or two weeks.
A construction steel trader in Bangkok said the current price of rebar TIS SD40 Φ16-25mm from local mills is THB19,700/t (USD634/t, VAT excluded), up by THB500/t over that in the middle of October.
The source said the rainy season is almost over and the traditional high season for construction steel will come in November, so most producers and traders are expecting for a price hike and mills begin raising offers slightly. However, he does not hold any stock at this moment because the price has been moving up and down frequently since early this year and it is risky to build stocks. The source said his inventory of construction steel was 500-1,000t in past years, and he deemed that the rebar price will go up further slightly in November when the demand increases.
