As one of important raw materials in steelmaking, steel scrap plays an important role in energy consumption during the whole steelmaking process
. According to statistics released by CISA, increase of raw material costs accounted for 66 . 7% of total increase of pig iron producing costs in 2010 . Fuel and energy costs increased 34 . 1% while manufacturing overheads decreased 1 . 0% . Steel mills only achieved marginal profits mainly due to increase of raw materials costs . Reducing ratio between iron usage and steel output is a main method of lowering energy consumption in current steel industry .
