On total consumption of steel scrap in 2012, the total consumption volume in 2012 reported the first drop over the past ten years and unit consumption of steel scrap in general steelmaking continued the declining trend
. Major mainstream steel mills reduced consumption of steel scrap to cut steelmaking cost, leading to weak states to both supply and demand on steel scrap market . Total consumption of steel scrap for steelmaking was about 82 . 5Mt, representing greatly drop from the previous year as self-produced steel scrap in steel mills amounted to be 36 . 5Mt, taking up about 45% of the total consumption, while purchased social steel scrap totaled 41Mt, dropping by 19 . 3% from the 50 . 8Mt in 2011 and occupying about 50% of the total consumption of steel scrap . In 2012, the unit consumption of domestic general steelmaking was 112kg, down by 21kg from the level in 2011, recording the lowest consumption over the past few years .
