Asian Metal successfully held World Antimony Forum 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand from April 23-24th, attracting large enterprises from upstream, midstream and downstream antimony industry of China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Europe, Russia, Australia, India, Vietnam and Turkey. Delegates from these countries had a deep discussion about focus issues of antimony industry under hot and relaxed atmosphere.
The forum started officially at 9:00am on April 24, and Ms. Annabella Xu, antimony market Associate Analyst from Beijing office of Asian Metal announced the beginning and made the opening speech. After then, Mr. Norman Ting, Chairman of Greater China from Traxys Far East Ltd. hosted the forum.
At the beginning of the forum, Mr. Tong Peng, Manager of Raw Material Division & Antimony Department of Minmetals Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd. gave a report named as “Review and Preview of Global Antimony Market”. In the report, Mr. Tong reviewed the development of antimony industry over the past ten years, including the price trend and some important events, such as mine accident, inspection on environmental protection, tax adjustment and the nation’s reservation for antimony ingot.
On future market trend of antimony, Mr. Tong pointed out that Chinese government has strengthened the strike on smuggle and placed more attention on environmental protection. In addition, the “inner circle” is becoming smaller as antimony resources see greater concentration. In this background, as a kind of scarce resource, antimony price will gradually show its value.
After that, Mr. Gu Yusheng, Vice President of Jiefu Corporation, General Manager of Guizhou Dongfeng Mining Group Co., Ltd. and Executive Member of China’s Flame Retardant Society made a speech named as “Development of Antimony in Flame Retardant Industry”. In the report, he focused on the dosage change following the price up and down for antimony trioxide, known as plastic industry’s “Industrial Monosodium Glutamate”. He then added that substitutes of the material have appeared as antimony price witnesses frequent fluctuation; however, antimony trioxide, having superior physical properties over other replacements, is still welcomed as additive flame retardant and is becoming familiar to more countries. Therefore, antimony trioxide still has a promising prospect for future development.
Later on, Mr. Jiro Bando, Director for Sales and Overseas Business of Nihon Seiko gave an outlook for future antimony market in Japan. He introduced the variation of demand for antimony metal and antimony trioxide over the past years in Japan after introducing the reserves and production of antimony ore and demand for antimony trioxide all over the world. In the final part of the report, he commented that antimony consumption will reduce in Japan with the development of fire retardant replacements; however, replacements using as resin refractory and polyester catalyst are not available now, so demand decrease for antimony is a temporary phenomenon unless price for the material sees significant increase, otherwise, the demand will keep stable in the future.
Mr. Kohei Yamada, Sales Dept. No.1 Strategic Metal Team in Advanced Material Japan Corporation shared a report with the name of “Demand Changes in Japanese Antimony Market”. In the speech, he pointed out that the production of automobile and electronic products has witnessed decrease for the past ten years in Japan. As a result, Japanese demand for antimony metal decreases while that from Southeast Asia still keeps expanding.
In the afternoon, Mr. Dai Aihua, President and General Manager of Dongguan Guanwei Trading Co., Ltd. gave an introduction to antimony trioxide substitutes, such as aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide and zinc borate as well as their application. Besides, other aspects including their advantages and disadvantages are also covered.
The last report of the forum, “The Markets and Applications of Antimony Deep-processing Products”, was given by Mr. Liu Donghua, President and General Manager of Hunan Jiary Industries Co., Ltd. Mr. Liu mainly focused on the application, usage and relative merits of antimony deep-processing products, including ethylene glycol antimony and sodium antimonite.
In the end, Asian Metal invited well-known sources to discuss hot topics such as reservation of antimony ingot, striking on smuggle, inspection on environment, enterprise transformation, resuming operation of overseas mines and building antimony plants etc. These senior sources were Mr. Yu Mu, General Manager of Antimony Department of Minmetals Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd., Mr. Zhang Jianfeng, General Manager of Hunan Provincial Loudi Xinghua Nonferrous Co., Ltd., Mr. Gu Yusheng, Vice President of Jiefu Corporation, General Manager of Guizhou Dongfeng Mining Group Co., Ltd. and Executive Member of China’s Flame Retardant Society as well as Mr. Norman Ting, Chairman of Greater China from Traxys Far East Ltd. They stated their opinions while participates also took an active part in the discussion. Due to the limited time, most of the participants did not have chance to share their viewpoints, so they were expecting the gathering at next year’ forum.
Sponsored by Yiyang Huachang Antimony Industry Co., Ltd., the forum successfully concluded with the support of Jiefu Corporation, Guizhou Provincial Metals & Minerals I & E Co., Ltd., Guizhou Dongfeng Mining Group Co., Ltd. and Antimony Industry Association of Lengshuijang as well as other attendees.
