Overview
Despite modest recovery in the global economy, European economic climate is yet to move from stabilization to sustained growth rate and, just as unemployment in the US is still above 7%, Chinese economy growth slowed down in 2012 with the real sector of iron and steel, cement and non-ferrous industries still unable to break-even whilst photovoltaic industry is largely crippled.
Silicon carbide, as the basic raw material of refractory, abrasive and photovoltaic industries, saw a sharp decline sale volume both in Chinese domestic and export markets. The operating rate kept low in silicon carbide producers, and they also faced the payment problem.
The emphasis by new set of Chinese leadership to continue to deepen openness in the economic sphere brings new hope to silicon carbide market players as it attracts attention in international economic circle.
With the slowdown in the Chinese economic growth to just over 7%, silicon carbide access was put on agenda for sector adjustment and owing to concerns over environment. This presents both opportunities and challenges for business and policy makers in directing the development of the sector.
Now that the export quotas system of silicon carbide is being canceled in 2013, how will the market react from both supply and demand side? Also of importance is the balance between natural resource exploitation and protecting the environment as the market is being thrown open for export.
