Chinese steel import to reach 20 million tons in 2010

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 24 Dec 10 – Statistics showed that the net export amount of China from January to October of 2010 was 23.17 million tons (with 36.8 million tons exported and 13.63 million tons imported), while the annual level is expected to be over 25 million tons. Meanwhile, the domestic crude steel output reached 525 million tons in the same period. In 2009, China exported steel products of 24.6 million tons, while the net export level was 6.97 million tons.
Since 2005, China had transformed from a net import country to the net export one with the increase of downstream industry demand. In addition, the import amount had maintained at 20 million tons since 2006.
Currently Korea still ranks as the first outlet marriage partner of China. Meanwhile, China endeavored to enlarge the export amount to newly emerging nations such as India, Brazil and Southeast Asia and so on.
Figures also showed that the import amount in 2010 witnessed a year-on-year decrease of 6%.
According to statistics of The World Steel Association (worldsteel), the worldwide export amounts occupied 35% of the total output from 2000 to 2008. While the proportion dropped to 26% in 2009 due to the financial crisis. Sources pointed out that the level will go up gradually with the warming-up of steel industry. However, as the worldwide largest steel producing country, China will not increase the import level greatly in following years. Nevertheless, with the rebounding of international steel products trading, there is large room for China to export steel products.
