PITTSBURGH (Asian Metal) 16 Mar 10 – Some South American manganese ore traders continue to report a lack of available material moving closer to the second quarter of 2010. Actual price levels, though stable at present, could push higher in the upcoming weeks if the shortage widens or demand further increases.
The current market for 44%min ore in Brazil continues at approximately USD4.9-5.1/dmtu FOB Brazil, which has held for the three weeks approximately.
One Brazilian trader, who until the end of 2009 had access to around 20,000t/m of 43-44% ore, reported now he has no material to source. According to the trader, floods and rains in Brazil during the past few months have made logistics for his suppliers impossibly expensive to compete on the international market.
“I probably won’t have any ore until 60 days from now,” the distributor said. “My suppliers have shut down until the logistical situation is cleared up.”
Another Brazilian trader, who indicated prices currently at USD5.0/dmtu FOB Brazil, also reported a lack of available ore for sale
. The source had only completed a 2,000t sale at USD4.8/dmtu FOB Brazil early February to a European buyer.“I had a small source of about 2,500t up until March, but it’s no longer available for sale. None of the bigger suppliers have anything to offer, either
. Most traders are waiting until April when there should be some more ore freed up,” the source said.
