India reports 3% rise in crude steel output in May 2026

India's crude steel production reached an estimated 14.21 million metric tonnes in May 2026, marking a 2.9% increase compared to the same month last year, according to data released by the Ministry of Steel on Thursday, June 4.
Finished steel production for May was estimated at 13.94 million tonnes, up 9% year on year, the data showed. During the April-May period of fiscal year 2026-27, crude steel output totaled 28.04 million tonnes, a 2.7% rise, while finished steel production increased 6.4% to 27.36 million tonnes, both on a year-on-year basis.
On the trade front, India imported 0.69 million tonnes of finished steel in May 2026, a 62.5% surge, while exports rose 29.9% to 0.51 million tonnes year on year.
For the April-May period, finished steel imports were estimated at 1.37 million tonnes and exports totaled 0.98 million tonnes, making India a net importer of steel during that period.
