On December 15, Sunstone Development Co., Ltd. and Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) signed a joint venture agreement to build a prebaked anode plant in the UAE with an annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes (Phase I). The project will require a total investment of about USD295 million, with construction scheduled to begin in 2026 and commercial operations expected in 2028. Sunstone will hold a 55% stake in the joint venture, while EGA will own the remaining 45%. Sunstone will be responsible for building and operating the facility.
This will be Sunstone's first overseas investment project. Once completed, the plant will supply prebaked anodes to EGA and also serve aluminum smelters in the Middle East and Europe, further expanding the company's global capacity expansion.
EGA is one of the world's leading high-purity aluminum producers, with an annual primary aluminum capacity of around 2.7 million tonnes. The UAE is the largest primary aluminum producer in the Middle East and a major source of petroleum coke, a key raw material for prebaked anodes. With new aluminum projects and anode capacity upgrades underway overseas, the project is well positioned to capture market demand.
