On December 3, the first 200,000-tonne shipment of high-grade iron ore from Simandou project, backed by Chinalco, departed from Guinea's Morebayah Port and set sail for China. The milestone marks the full commissioning of the world-class mine's integrated "mine-railway-port-shipping" supply chain.
Simandou, located in southeastern Guinea, is one of the world's largest and highest-grade open-pit hematite deposits, holding more than 4 billion tonnes of iron ore resources with an average iron grade above 65%. The project is divided into southern blocks jointly developed by Chinalco and Rio Tinto, and northern blocks developed by Baowu and the SMB-Winning Consortium.
Under a phased development plan, Simandou aims to gradually reach a combined annual production capacity of 120 million tonnes, putting Guinea on track to become the world's third-largest iron ore supplier after Australia and Brazil.
