China's first international standard for the lithium sector, Lithium - Vocabulary (ISO 7819:2025), has been officially released. Led by Suining City and developed by Tianqi Lithium, the standard defines key terms across the full lithium value chain from resource extraction to materials and battery production, creating a unified language for global lithium trade.
For years, inconsistent terminology, such as how lithium concentrate grades or lithium compounds are classified, has caused confusion and trade disputes. The new standard fills this gap and marks a major step forward for China in shaping global standards in the lithium industry.
Known as "China's Lithium Capital", Suining hosts the world's largest hard-rock lithium extraction base and ranks among the top in Sichuan's lithium battery industry. The new standard will help China move from being a "scale leader" to a "standards leader" in lithium, while offering a "Chinese solution" to support the high-quality development of the global new energy sector.
