Since the start of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), Shanxi has launched a new round of mineral exploration, investing 1.85 billion yuan (261 million US dollars) to prospect and explore 63 minerals across 1,425 mining areas. The focus is on strategic resources such as bauxite, iron, copper, and gold, and the province is on track to exceed its five-year exploration targets, according to the latest press conference held by the Shanxi Department of Natural Resources.
Shanxi is rich in non-coal minerals, with over 120 types identified. Among them, 33 rank in the national top ten for reserves, and coalbed methane, bauxite, refractory clay, and dolomite rank first in China.
To date, Shanxi has publicly granted 20 mining rights for coal, bauxite, and coalbed methane, totaling 117.8 billion yuan (16.64 billion US dollars). The new projects are expected to add annual production capacity of around 29.2 million tonnes of coal and 10 million tonnes of bauxite.
