High-purity rare earth and high-end rare earth alloy project to break ground in Liuyang, China

On August 9, Hunan Rare Earth Metal Materials Research Institute Co., Ltd. entered into an agreement with Liuyang Economic Development Zone to develop an industrial project with annual production capacity of 25t of high-purity rare earth metal target materials and 2,000t of high-end rare earth alloy, and the total investment is estimated at RMB1.02 billion (USD141 million). The project will mainly produce high-purity scandium metal, Al-Sc alloy target material, Tb-Dy target material and RE-Mg alloy, and is expected to achieve annual production value of RMB850 million (USD117 million) after commencing production by late 2014.
The project will use newly-developed purification technology to produce scandium metal 99.99%, with purity up to 99.999%.
With initial design, safety assessment and environmental impact assessment already completed, the project is expected to obtain land-use right in September and begin construction in November.
