Coal tar pitch prices in China keep a downward trend

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 13 Apr 23 - From late last month, the purchase demand for coal tar pitch weakened, leading to reduced prices. Current mainstream prices for coal tar pitch C.V. 53%min stand at RMB5,450-5,650/t (USD792-821/t) EXW, down by RMB50/t (USD7/t) from early this week for the sluggish demand. Both producers and buyers anticipate lower prices late this month.
A Henan-based coal tar pitch producer reported that they now offer RMB5,500/t (USD799/t) EXW for coal tar pitch C.V. 53%min and lately sold around 1,000t at around RMB6,000/t (USD872/t) late last week. "We cut the offer because of the reduced demand and I think the price would go down further late this month," said the source, who reduced production from one month ago for the weak demand and holds no stock now.
Based on three production lines and the total production capacity of 300,000tpy, they produced around 10,000t in March, down from around 15,000t in the previous month and have no plan to restart normal operation in April. They produced over 40,000t so far this year and around 160,000t last year.
A prebaked anode producer in south China anticipated that the price for coal tar pitch C.V. 53%min might drop close to RMB5,000/t (USD726/t) EXW late this month, so they do not plan to place a new order in the coming two weeks. "We lately ordered around 2,000t at around RMB5,700/t (USD828/t) EXW ten days ago," said the source, who usually purchases around 3,000t per month and keeps over 3,000t in stock, but holds around 2,000t in stock now.
