Chinese origin bauxite prices slip

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 12 Apr 23 - From early April, the bauxite supply from Shanxi increased while the purchase demand did not improve. Present mainstream prices for bauxite Al/Si=5.0 Al2O3 60%min keep at RMB480-500/t (USD70-73/t) Ex-VAT delivered, down by RMB5/t (USD0.7/t) from late last week and bauxite suppliers anticipate stable prices in the coming week.
A Shanxi-based bauxite trader reported that buyers cut the purchase price by over RMB10/t (USD1.5/t) from early this month and they sold close to 100,000t of bauxite Al/Si=5.0 Al2O3 58%min at around RMB470/t (USD68/t) Ex-VAT delivered one week ago, compared with over RMB480/t (USD70/t) Ex-VAT delivered one month ago for around 100,000t. "We restarted trade business from late February and more bauxite producers resumed operation over the past month," said the source, who keeps over 50,000t in stock now and maintains the same offer at present, anticipating stable prices in the coming week.
The trader, with the regular sales volume of 100,000tpm, sold less than 100,000t in March and did not close any deals in February. They sold over 1 million tonnes in 2022 and over 200,000t so far this year.
Another trader of bauxite from Shanxi confirmed that they lately sold around 100,000t of bauxite Al/Si=5.0 Al2O3 58%min at around RMB470/t (USD68/t) Ex-VAT delivered one week ago, down by over RMB10/t (USD1.5/t) from one month ago for the same quantity. "We now offer RMB470/t (USD68/t) as end users refuse to accept higher prices because of the reduced demand and increased bauxite supply," said the source, who once held no stock in February and now holds around 30,000t. They would maintain the same price in the coming week.
