Coal tar pitch prices in China down

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 4 Apr 23 - From the middle of March, prebaked anode producers in China cut production, leading to weak demand for coal tar pitch. Current mainstream prices for coal tar pitch C.V. 53%min in China keep at RMB5,800-6,100/t (USD842-886/t) EXW, down by over RMB200/t (USD29/t) from late last week and producers anticipate lower prices in the coming week because of the weak demand and reduced coal tar prices.
A producer of coal tar pitch from Henan reported that they lately sold around 400t of coal tar pitch C.V. 53%min at around RMB5,900/t (USD857/t) EXW late last week and now offer RMB5,800/t (USD842/t) EXW, while buyers request RMB5,700/t (USD828/t) EXW. "I think the price would go down in the coming week, as the best offer for coal tar slipped over RMB300/t (USD44/t) to around RMB4,900/t (USD711/t) delivered over the past week," said the source.
Based on the production capacity of 150,000tpy, they produced around 8,000t in March and target the same volume in April, with no inventory now. They produced around 80,000t in 2022 and over 20,000t so far this year.
A prebaked anode producer from Shandong confirmed that the mainstream offer for coal tar pitch C.V. 53%min now keeps at around RMB5,800/t (USD842/t) EXW and they ordered around 500t at around RMB5,800/t (USD842/t) EXW one day ago, compared with around RMB6,100/t (USD886/t) EXW for the same volume one week ago. "The demand weakened and I think the price would drop again in the coming week," said the source, who holds around 300t in stock now, less than around 450t one month ago.
