Chinese graphite electrode prices to go down

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 23 Mar 23 - Over the past two weeks, the demand for graphite electrode from China remained weak and pet coke prices reduced, leading to reduced graphite electrode prices. Present mainstream prices for HP graphite electrode D500mm keep at RMB19,500-20,000/t (USD2,832-2,905/t) EXW, down by RMB300/t (USD44/t) from late last week and producers anticipate lower prices late this month.
A Liaoning-based graphite electrode producer reported that they now offer RMB19,500/t (USD2,832/t) EXW for HP graphite electrode D500mm but buyers request RMB19,000/t (USD2,760/t) EXW. "We lately sold around 100t at around RMB22,000/t (USD3,196/t) EXW early this month," said the source, adding that most buyers watch the market for lower prices and I think the price would reach around RMB19,000/t (USD2,760/t) EXW late this month. For the sluggish market, they remain out of production now.
Based on the production capacity of 40,000tpy, they produced around 3,000t in 2022 and shut down operation from Q2 and might restart operation from this June, with semi-finished stocks around 10,000t.
Another Liaoning-based producer of graphite electrode confirmed that they lately sold around 100t of HP graphite electrode D400mm at around RMB18,500/t (USD2,687/t) EXW in the middle of this month, while now buyers ask for RMB18,000/t (USD2,615/t) EXW. "We now offer RMB18,500/t (USD2,687/t) EXW and would reduce the offer, as pet coke prices reduced," said the source, adding that the best offer for pet coke S 0.5%max reduced by close to RMB1,000/t (USD145/t) to around RMB4,900/t (USD712/t) EXW from early this month, so he anticipated lower graphite electrode prices late this month.
The producer, with the production capacity of 30,000tpy, remained out of production since last July and might restart in H2, 2023. They produced around 10,000t in 2022 and hold over 10,000t of semi-finished stock now.
