Import prices of high grade silicon metal in Japan edge up

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 16 Mar 23 - Encouraged by the firm prices in China and appreciating CNY, the current mainstream import prices of silicon metal 3-3-03 in Japan edged up by USD20/t to USD2,570-2,670/t CIF Japan this week from early last week. Given the firm offers from international suppliers, insiders predict the mainstream import prices of silicon metal 3-3-03 in Japan would go firm next week.
"I bought 40t of silicon metal 3-3-03 at USD2,570/t CIF Japan on Tuesday from a regular Chinese supplier who could accept USD2,550/t for the same amount since early last week," disclosed a trader in Japan on Wednesday. He added that his major suppliers increased prices by USD20-30/t upon the appreciating CNY against USD this week and firm prices in China, and he predicts the mainstream import prices of silicon metal 3-3-03 in China would go firm next week upon the firm prices in China and the potential risk of CNY appreciation.
Based on a regular monthly trading volume of 300t of silicon metal, the trader expects to purchase around 100t in March, down by about 100t from last month, keeping around 50t in stock.
"The current offer for silicon metal 3-3-03 hits USD2,600/t CIF Japan with the discount of USD20/t at most for firm bids, while the supplier could accept as low as USD2,550/t since early last week, but I didn't purchase yet," revealed another trader in Japan on Wednesday. He added that he last purchased 100t at USD2,540/t in early March, and the appreciated CNY against USD and bare slide room for prices in China drove most suppliers' prices up by USD30/t this week against last week, and he predicts the mainstream import prices of silicon metal 3-3-03 in Japan would go firm upon the firm offers from Chinese suppliers.
